The Artist as a Young Man

January 21st - February 8th 2019

Ivan Savov, well known to the Bulgarian public, is presenting a second exhibition at Stubel Gallery.

Last summer, at his home in Sliven, he discovered more than a hundred nearly forgotten paintings, most of them small format. Naturally they carry the marks of a novice – Savov painted them when he was just 16-18 years of age.

At the same time, they bear the mark of the time when they were created – the early 60s of the last century, a period of loosening of the themes and the means of expression in Bulgarian art. Different influences can be felt in the works of the developing artist – traces of Impressionism and Expressionism, by the movement of “Rodno izkustvo”, of Slavka Deneva and Ivan Kirkov, with whom he has close ties. The serene tone of these paintings captivates with the young man’s naïve optimism and the sincere belief in a future in art.

The present exhibition consists of approximately 60 paintings, all of them created in the time period of 1959 – 1964.

Ivan Savov was born in Sliven in 1944. He graduated from the School of Applied Art in Sofia. For many years he worked as the lead artist of Russe Opera Theater; he has also been the lead artist and director of the Opera houses of Plovdiv and Burgas, the director and scenographer of the Blagodevgrad Chamber Opera, and the principal artist of the Stara Zagora Opera. He has realized more than 250 scenography projects for opera, ballet and theater performances.

In 1991, he also began working as a director. Since then, he has brought to the stage more than 30 operas, performed all over Europe, as well as America and Asia.

He holds a number of awards, including a Silver Lyre (1987), Golden Lyre (2004), and Crystal Lyres of the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers, an Award for Scenography of the Union of Bulgarian Artists, and the National Award for Literature and Art “Dobri Chintulov” (2018).

Works of Ivan Savov are in the collections of the National Art Gallery, the city galleries of Sliven, Ruse, Stara Zagora and many private collectors in Bulgaria, Switzerland, Belgium, USA, Sweden etc.
